Besides adoring peanut butter and attempting to capture peacocks, in the past I aspired to be an astronaut, speed skater, ballerina, and sing like Whitney Houston. Now, I humbly acknowledge that I probably will never be any of these things. Nevertheless, I am an inner-city first-grade teacher, runner, vegetarian (99% of the time), baker, and like many people, super busy.
During my first year of teaching behavior needs boys in inner-city Atlanta, my amazing father passed away from metastatic melanoma. Throughout his illness and my grief I tried to focus on his mantra: “rest, nourish, fitness, fun.” This is what I try to live by, even though as I educate my amazing first graders, I sometimes struggle to find time to exercise enough and eat healthfully. This blog is my attempt to share how I manage the “third leg of the stool”- aka how I make time for me and take care of myself. Only by taking care of myself can I sustain the intense energy necessary to take care of others.
